Olive Barnard Hankey

by Mabel Lee Hankey

Eldest son of John Barnard Hankey and his wife Fanny, born on 22 Mar 1873 and baptised on 27 Apr at Fetcham. He was educated at Eton and RMC.

George Hankey served in the Boer War as a lieutenant in the Queens Royal Rifles, and was involved in a number of engagements, including the relief of Ladysmith. Soon after his return he was married, on 18 Oct 1900, to Olive Sturgis (1877-1961), daughter of Henry Sturgis of Givons, Leatherhead; he was the father of an only child, Hans.

George Hankey, with others of his relations, had inherited Fetcham Park in 1914. He served throughout World War I as a Major, and returned to live at Fetcham. In 1924 he sold most (149 acres) of the remaining land for building development, and in 1925 Fetcham Park itself, thus ending the family ownership of 136 years. The house was used as a prep school until 1965, and was thoroughly renovated (at a cost stated to be £4 million) as a company headquarters in 1980-82, with only 4.7 acres remaining.

He moved to Castle Priory, Wallingford, and died on 1 Feb 1949.
