George James Barnard Hankey (1809-1875)

 

Second child and eldest son of John Barnard Hankey of Fetcham Park, and his wife Elizabeth, George was born on 27 Nov 1809 and baptised on 6 Feb 1810 at Fetcham. Educated at Eton.

George was married on 15 Jan 1843 to Andalusia Barclay (1814-1876), second daughter of the late George Barclay, MP, of Burford Lodge, Mickleham; Barclay’s father was ‘an unscrupulous Portugal merchant’, and he was no saint himself, failing for £300,000 in 1803.

George and Andalusia had a son and a daughter:

Evelyn Elizabeth Barnard    

1847-1927

m 1874 6th Earl Bathurst

 

George Barnard Hankey inherited Fetcham Park in 1868. His daughter Evelyn Elizabeth was married at Fetcham on 6 Jun 1874. Only seven months after his daughter’s wedding, George died, on 14 Jan 1875 at Fetcham Park and was buried on 19 Jan at Fetcham. He had been only six years in possession of his estate.
