1808-1880

Eldest child of John Barnard Hankey of Fetcham Park, Mary was born on 24 Jun 1808. She was married at Fetcham on 6 Feb 1828 to William Holme Sumner (1798-1859) of Hatchlands, East Clandon.

William Holme Sumner was the son of George Holme Sumner, MP, eldest son of William Brightwell Sumner. The latter was a highly successful member of the East India Company who resigned from the Council of India in 1767 and used the fortune he had built up to acquire in 1770 the estate of Hatchlands, East Clandon, originally built by Adam for Admiral Earl Boscawen. In 1768 he had also become a neighbour of Joseph Chaplin Hankey in Great George Street, Westminster. George Holme Sumner and his brother and sister were painted by John Zoffany in about 1764 (sold at Christies 11 Jul 1997).

Mary died on 2 Dec 1880.
