Louisa Eleanor Davidson (nee Barnard Hankey) (1816-1893)

Seventh child and second daughter of John Barnard Hankey of Fetcham Park, Louisa was born on 3 Nov 1816 at London, and baptised on 3 Feb 1817 at Fetcham. She was married at Fetcham on 10 Jul 1838 to William Davidson  (1808-1894), son of Henry Davidson of Tulloch. The family lived at Welwyn.

William Davidson was a West India merchant, but as the plantation system declined, William and his brother Henry got into Property Development and Financial Services (especially Life Assurance). Henry Davidson was a Director of the Bank of England 1835-1842 (being appointed in the same year as Thomson Hankey), as had been his father Henry Davidson of Tulloch 1807-1820.

William Davidson’s great great grandson Nick Hide has done extensive research showing how the Davidson, Hankey and other families were closely involved together both in business and socially, with connections from 1800 until the early decades of the 20th century. The root of this connection stems from the tight network of West India / City of London Merchants in and around Fenchurch Street, down to playing cricket together, acting as godparents, or hosts in old age.

As an example of family connections, Henry Davidson was married in 1837 to Caroline Blake, whose younger sister Ellen Blake had been married in 1825 to John Alexander Hankey; the sisters were daughters of William Blake of Danesbury, Welwyn.

Louisa died in 1893 at Welwyn.
