Ernest Thomas Hankey (1838-1905)

Fourth surviving son of Thomas Hankey, Ernest was baptized on 12 Oct 1838 at Wimbledon.

He was married on 27 Dec 1877 at Quebec to Minna Greenshields nee Rowland, a Canadian.

He was originally an East India merchant.  He was living at Half Way Tree, St Andrew, Jamaica when his daughter Gwendoline was born there in 1879; the family were at Cleveland, Ohio in 1880. There are various indications (including the probate records) that he was not altogether successful in business. He was involved with Thomas Alers Hankey and his son Edward Hankey in the Plymouth Ironworks. He was a Fellow of the Zoological Society.

In April 1905 he was staying with his brother Montagu at Maiden Newton Rectory in Dorset, and was found dead in bed with his throat cut. The coroner heard that Ernest had suffered from depression and recorded a verdict of suicide. Ernest and Minna (c.1854-1928) are both buried at Brompton Cemetery.
