William Henry Hankey (1831-1869)

 

William Hankey was baptised at Holy Trinity, Brompton on 13 May 1831, the elder son of William Hankey of Middleton Hall, Linlithgowshire. He married Mary Ann Sarah Scott on 17 Aug 1863 at Kirkwall. Mary Ann had been born in 1842 at Penang, Malaysia, and it seems likely that she was a descendant of James Scott (1746-1808), one of the co-founders of Penang.

William and Mary Ann had five children:

She married John Bowie in 1885 and Alfred Edward Jackson in 1895.

William Scott

c 15 Dec 1864 at Kirkwall

Bank apprentice (1881). Died 21 Dec 1889 at Edinburgh.

Edward, c 21 Jun 1868 at Kirkwall. He worked with the Marconi company at Marconi Towers, Port Morien, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. He died there on 22 Oct 1907, within days of the first official messages of the transatlantic commercial wireless telegraph service from Marconi Towers.        

Louisa, c 19 Sep 1869 at Kirkwall. m 1902 Dr John Joseph Macnamara.

The family lived at Crantit House, near Kirkwall. William Hankey died nearby at Nether Scapa, near Kirkwall on 30 Mar 1869. His widow moved with her four surviving children to Edinburgh, living at 12 Clarence Street (1881) and at 4 Woodburn Terrace (1891). She lived after 1891 at 85 Brook Green, London, and died on 15 Nov 1911 at 3 Holland Road, Kensington.
