Cecile (Tommy) Aitcheson Hankey (1840-1925)

Elder daughter of Henry and Caroline Hankey, Cecile (known as Tommy) was born at East Sheen on 29 May 1840, and baptised on 26 Jun 1840 at Mortlake. She was married on 17 Aug 1870 to Hon George Frederick Nugent Greville, MP, (1842-1897) second son of 1st Baron Greville. They had no children. After her husband’s death, she was a widow for 28 years and died on 9 Jun 1925.

Cecile was first cousin to 6th Earl Bathurst (1832-1892), who in 1874 married his third cousin Evelyn Barnard Hankey of Fetcham Park. She was also step-sister of Countess Stanhope (see above).

Cecile was aunt by marriage to the famous society hostess Mrs Ronald Greville, of Polesden Lacey, which is very near to the Hankey seat at Fetcham. Had Mrs Ronald Greville’s husband not died in 1908 at the age of 43, he would in 1909 have become the third Baron Greville, and inherited over 18,000 acres in Ireland and 1,100 acres in Kent.
