1875 - 1945

The fifth child and only daughter of Frederick and Marian Alers Hankey, Esmè was born in 1875 at Chertsey.

She was married in 1902 to the Ven. Thomas Karl Sopwith, Vicar of Shoreham and later Archdeacon of Canterbury, by whom she had two daughters (Marian and Esmè).

Esmè was probably the perfect foil for her husband, with whom she shared a great sense of humour, and had an ear for odd phrases and sayings.

She was very musical with a beautiful voice and used to sing (mostly Victorian ballads) to her family and friends, and to entertain the troops in the first world war.
