1883 - 1951

Fifth son and youngest child of Frederick Alers Hankey, Harold was born in 1883 at Chertsey.

He was commissioned as second lieutenant in the Militia Forces 3rd Battalion of the Royal West Surrey Regiment. He arrived in New Zealand in about 1908 with an amount of money said to be between £40,000 and £90,000, which enabled him to make a number of investments: a boat Mana; a number of farms in Waipahi and Purakanui; land in Warrington; and according to his daughter, New Zealand’s first Cadillac.

He eloped with Rose Meronea Rendall (1887-1950) to Auckland, where they were married in 1913. Rose Rendall was a lady of Maori and Irish descent, and was owner of a house in Warrington named Te Pa, later known also as Captain Hankey’s House.

Harold also owned a house named Silverlands (after his father’s house at Chertsey) at 6 Napier Street, Mornington, Dunedin. Silverlands was sold in 1925 and Te Pa in 1926, after which the family lived in a number of boarding houses in Dunedin, before moving in with Rose’s mother Katerina Rendall in 1931.

He died on 9 Aug 1951 at Dunedin.
