Walter, the second child and only son of Stephen Alers Hankey, was born in 1839 at Marylebone.

Walter Childe Alers Hankey received the Royal Humane society silver medal under RHS case no 15054: On 29 April 1851 Charles Childe (16) and Alers Hankey (11) were collecting aquatic insects in a pond in Sydenham, during which activity Childe slipped into the pond. Unable to swim, he immediately sank. Alers Hankey got over the railings and jumped into the pond fully clothed. Swimming to the centre of the pond, he managed to push Childe until he got him to the bank.

The RHS General Court on 9 July 1851 confirmed the award of the Society’s silver medal.

Born in 1839 the only son of Stephen A Hankey, of Brighton and London, Walter Childe Alers Hankey was educated at Corpus Christi College Oxford, to which he matriculated on 8 June 1858.
