1868 - 1950

Third son of  John Alers Hankey of Torquay, Charlie was born on 9 Aug 1868 in London and was educated at Sherborne.

He was a Major in the Highland Light Infantry and was seconded to the Military Police. He went to South Africa with his younger brother Tim to farm wattle in Natal.

He was married in 1897 to Sheila Fannin, daughter of Judge Fannin of Natal, by whom he had one son and one surviving daughter.

During the Boer War he was a Trooper in Murray’s Horse, and is believed to have taken part in the Jameson Raid.

Charlie and Sheila retired to Totnes, but not liking English winters, they often spent the winter in Madeira.

Sheila died on 12 Jul 1934 and Charlie on 12 Oct 1950.
