Second son of Jameson Alers Hankey, Lionel was born in 1866 at Widmore, Bromley. Educated at Sherborne. He was married on 23 Apr 1895, at Grace Church, New York, to Carrie Lockwood, widow of Howard Lockwood (1846-1892). The reception was held at the bride’s home 145 West 58th Street.

Carrie was born in New York on 1 Dec 1852, daughter of John and Abigail Colgate Baker and grand-daughter of Bowles Colgate (1789-1845), the American soap manufacturer.

Carrie was President and Lionel Treasurer of Howard Lockwood & Co Corporation, printers and publishers of 520 West Broadway, New York. The firm had been founded in 1872 by Howard Lockwood. The firm, which published several trade journals, failed in 1899 after suffering losses for a considerable time. Lionel and his wife held $92,400 of the firm’s $100,000 capital stock, and Lionel had provided a further $27,000 of loans.

Lionel and Carrie lived largely in London after their marriage, and he was living at 36 Sloane Court, Lower Sloane Street when he died on 16 May 1905, aged 39. Carrie died at 36 Sloane Court on 5 Dec 1908, aged 56, leaving an estate of £8,000. There were no children.
