Third child and second daughter of Jameson Alers Hankey, Lil was born on 28 Sep 1863 and was baptised on 29 Oct 1863 at Bromley.

She was married on 23 Aug 1883 at Bexleyheath to her cousin Edmund (Ned) Lyons Evan Thomas (1856-1927). The officiating minister was Rev Main Swete Alexander Walrond, a descendant of Minna Alers Hankey’s great grandfather Main Swete Walrond.

Among Edmund’s many interests, he was at one time a general manager of Gellatly Hankey. They had three surviving daughters. Lil died on 15 Nov 1949.

‘When we were in London Aunt Lil used to send her Daimler, driven by the chauffeur, Glover, to fetch mother and me for lunch. She was a very impressive woman with white curls, makeup, and a sort of lacey thing in her hair.’ Judy Coppola
