Eighth son of Jameson Alers Hankey, Eric was born on 15 Feb 1880 at Bexley. He was married in 1910 to Frances Clare Petitia Phillips. They had one son, Nigel Clinton Alers Hankey (1911-1941), who married in 1938 Anne LH Alexander, by whom he had one son Graham Clinton Alers Hankey (1939-49). Eric ran a travel agency, and it seems that at one time he worked as a book-keeper for his brother Gerald in Canada.

‘We visited Uncle Eric and his wife Frances at a gorgeous place on the Thames, probably. The party was held outside ‘ huge lawn that sloped down to the water. I was told that Eric was back from looking for treasure on Cocos Island [300 miles off Costa Rica] ‘ unsuccessfully. I don’t think that was a joke as I heard talk of this on several occasions.’  Judy Coppola.

This tale may be related to  the fact that Eric and Nigel Alers Hankey (his nephew) arrived at Plymouth on the P & O Orbita on 12 Apr 1936 fom Cristobal, Canal Zone. Eric was then stated as a Director, of Piccadilly House, 16/17 Jermyn Street. Cynthia Tosswill also related the tale about her uncle and brother.
