Second son of Ernest Alers Hankey of Lacock, Basil was born on 30 Aug 1868. CBE, KSt J. Of Stanton Manor, Chippenham. Educated at Sherborne. He was married on 8 Jan 1907 to Maud Wyndham Gooden, daughter of Col. JRP Gooden of Compton House, Sherborne; by her he had two sons (both killed in the second world war) and a daughter.
Basil was a considerable historian of the Hankey and Alers Hankey families. He continued the massive research of his cousin Henry Alers Hankey, and had the family trees printed in 1912. Basil died on 10 Jun 1948 and his widow on 16 Mar 1972, aged 95.
