He was a colonial merchant, living at Wickamstead, Beckenham (1847, 1858, 1861). He was a director of the Colonial Bank 1849-1856. Shortly after 1871 he moved to Henley House, Frant (where there were nine staff in 1881).

Photograph taken at Henley House, Frant, showing the Hankey nieces amid a host of servants.

The patriarchal gardener, Knight, stands next to the under-groom, who clasps his top hat – as does Perry the coachman, seen on the far right.

Mrs Knight is the little bright-eyed woman to the right of the smirking footman, Frank, (centre).

In the doorway Mr de Beaux stands between Mrs Patey the cook and Ella the head housemaid. The seated figures are (left to right): Agatha Hankey, Bee-Bee, ‘Grannie’ (nurse), Eva Hankey and, seated on the ground, Beatrice Hankey.

George Hankey was a JP for Sussex. He was married on 16 Aug 1838 at St George’s, Hanover Square to his second cousin Caroline Donovan (1818-1878), daughter of Alexander Donovan, JP, of Framfield Park, Sussex, by whom he had three sons and seven daughters.

His daughter Beatrice (1858-1933), an evangelist, has a long entry in the Dictionary of National Biography, 2004. Following Caroline’s death on 10 Dec 1878, George married secondly in 1880 Katherine (Kate) Selina Ardill (1835-1917), daughter of Rev Richard Ardill of Johnstown, co Dublin.
